They are conventional low-silicate coolants but the coolant is named after the inhibitor package it contains, Inorganic Additive Technology. IAT coolants are widely used in cars and light-weight trucks.
OAT Coolants: OAT is an abbreviation of Organic Additive Technology. These coolants do not contain nitrite. OAT coolants have a long service life and you need not change coolants for 600,000 miles or 12,000 engine hours.
HOAT Coolants: HOAT is an abbreviation of Hybrid Organic Acid Technology. These coolants have a combination of two inhibitors, Silicates and Organic acids. Like IAT coolants, HOAT coolants need the addition of supplemental coolant additives to protect the engine.
NOAT Coolants: NOAT is an abbreviation of Nitrited Organic Acid Technology. NOAT coolants do not require the addition of supplemental coolant additives until 6,000 engine hours to achieve its full-service life of 12,000 engine hours. It is an extended life coolant that has an inhibitor package containing organic acids and nitrite.
Many car owners use the color key to determine the right coolant for their car which is wrong. The color is added to the coolant for a specific purpose which is that the antifreeze compound and water are colorless. The colored dye in the coolant allows detection of coolant leaks. You should never go by the color to decide the right coolant for your car. If you mix two different types of coolants with the same color, it might cause overheating of the engine as coolants won’t work well after mixing. Instead, you should look for the inhibitor package in the coolant to determine the right coolant to use in your car.
