When and How to Change the Oil in Your Car

When and How to Change the Oil in Your Car

If you’re always wondering how to keep your car working at its best, one of the most important things to keep an eye out for is when and how to change the engine oil in your car. Along with keeping the exterior of your car looking impeccable, it is also crucial to ensure that everything is running smoothly on the inside. You can do so by keeping a tab on your motor oil.

If you’re not sure why there’s a need to stress this particular exercise, here’s a lowdown on how important your engine oil essentially is. The engine oil makes sure that all systems related to the engine stay lubricated and do not brush against each other, causing strains in the mechanism of the car. It acts as the key agent in keeping your car running smooth for longer periods of time, without any overheating.

The Ideal Time to Change

Now that the fact of how important it is to change your oil on a regular basis is established, it is also important to know how frequently you might have to do this task for the best output.

It is always advisable to keep checking your car’s oil level with every passing month in order to prevent any damage to the engine. Otherwise, the ideal time to get your oil changed is stated in your car model’s instruction manual, which you must keep in mind at all times. Some cars are embedded with a system that notifies the driver when the need of an oil change arises.

In case there is no other way that helps you determine when to change the oil, you can use the universally accepted 3,000-mile or three-month rule, unless of course you’re facing problems such as blackened oil, noisy or bumpy rides, or a possible oil leak.

Do-It-Yourself

The best way to change the oil in your car is to keep a tab on it and change the actual oil yourself, instead of spending money on it with each change, unless there is a malfunction or a leak.

What you’ll need are wheel blocks, jack stands, a drain pan, gloves, replacement oil, a new oil filter and a wrench to complete the entire task. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how you can master the craft on your own.

1. Make sure the car is rendered immobile by ensuring that the gears and brakes are in place, along with wheel blocks or tire restraints.

2. Search for the perfect jacking point on your car in order to do the task easily and place a jack stand where you see fit for easy access to the oil plug.

3. Open the hood of your car and remove the oil cap before placing a drain pan below the car and removing the oil plug situated on the underside. Once this is done, wait for the oil to drain out in the pan for a few minutes.

4. Change the oil filter with a brand-new piece and fix it tight before putting the oil plug back on.

5. Finally, pour the new replacement oil in and screw the oil cap back on.

These are the most effective tips and tricks you need to keep in mind when it comes to changing your car’s engine oil.
