Get Your Vehicle Ready for Upcoming Road Trips

When you are on a road trip, the last thing you want is for your car to breakdown. Imagine being stranded on a highway or countryside with no help nearby. You should take all steps to avoid such situation especially if you are planning to go on a road trip. Here are some useful tips that would make your car ready for your next trip.

Preparation

Hitting the highway or dirt roads in the countryside without some preparation can become a big headache. Preparing your vehicle for upcoming road trips should  include some checkups, repairs and some replacements if needed. Don’t wait for the day before you hit the road. Vehicle inspections and repairs can take some time so you need to take your vehicle to the garage at least a week before the upcoming road trip. Here are some things you need to do before you hit the road.

  • Check/Change Oil: If you have recently changed your oil, take a dipstick to see if the oil levels have not touched the minimum. If the oil is black, it is an indication of oil change required.
  • Check the Spark Plugs: If your vehicle has been idle for a long time, you need to check that the spark plug is working fine and you don’t experience problems while starting the engine. If you see residue, corrosion or gap between the electrodes, get the spark plug changed.
  • Examine Engine Filter: Air filters keep the dirt away from your engine. Over time, the air filter gets clogged due to debris and dirt. Examine the air filter carefully and get it replaced if you find it filled with debris.
  • Check the Battery: After the spark plug, you need to check the battery for any leaks, loose connections, broken cables or corrosion. If you see that the battery is leaking, get it changed before you hit the road.
  • Examine Fluid Levels: Transmission, brake fluid and radiator coolant are important fluids in your car. Make sure all fluids are at recommended levels. If not, be sure to get them filled before you head out.
  • Examine Tire Condition: You need to ensure that your tires are in good condition, the treads are not worn and the air pressure is at the recommended level. If the tires expiry date is close, get the tires replaced before hitting the road. Don’t forget to check the spare tire and the jack.
  • Inspect Hoses and Belts: Hoses and belts are important parts of your vehicle. The hoses help gases and liquid move around the engine and its components, while belts help internal components move. Inspect the state of your hoses and belts and if you see any cracks or wear and tear, get them replaced before your upcoming trip.
  • Get an Emergency Car Kit: You can take every precaution to keep your car in good health but there is no guarantee an emergency won’t come knocking on your car door when on a road trip. To be on the safe side, get an emergency kit for your car that would come in handy for emergencies or small repairs.

When your vehicle is in good health, you can depend on your car for a safe and comfortable ride and enjoy the road trip to the fullest.
