The
group ASALH, known today as the Association for the Study of African American
Life and History, sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the
second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and
Frederick Douglass. The event
inspired schools and communities nationwide to celebrate.
Many places in the US are known for celebrating this month, and
among them is Morristown. Morristown is a city in Tennessee that celebrates
this month with great vigour. Many exciting events are conducted here that can
be a great way of celebrating this month. Black History Month is celebrated
throughout February, and so events are planned and organized accordingly.
Here are a few of the events that take place in Morristown.
- Museum
Tours:
The Tennessee State Museum here arranges for a great tour about 45 minutes
long. It takes the participants through a journey and talks about the
history of African Americans. This 45-minute-long tour highlights the
significant events and speaks of the diverse culture of African Americans.
It also aims at educating the audience regarding the oppression that they
had to face. This tour is free, and people can enjoy this in the
second-floor lobby of the museum.
- Morristown
College: The Morristown College is an institution for
education founded in the year 1881 by the National Freedman's Aids Society
of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The college has seen many such
significant historical events and still stands strong. The college speaks
of all its struggles and is now a popular site for people to visit. A park
has been created here in the memory of all African Americans. The college
organizes a tour where it speaks of the institution's history and the
African Americans.
People can also travel throughout the city to explore more about
Black History Month. The city has been home to many African Americans and all
the oppression that they had to suffer. This city is rich in culture and
diversity, and the best way to find that out is by exploring the city by
