The city, which serves as the county seat of Hamblen County, has been known as Morristown since its first European settler, a farmer named Gideon Morris, arrived in the late 18th century. Many of Morris' descendants still live in and around Hamblen County. The Crockett family moved to Morristown in the 1790s, where they built and operated a tavern out of their home. A reconstruction of the tavern serves today as the Crockett Tavern Museum. |

Morristown is also noteworthy for its many examples of Antebellum architecture. The Morristown of today, however, is a modern city that is home to more than 29,000 residents, as well as three industrial parks, 87 manufacturing companies and 27 wholesale distribution companies employing more than 11,000 people from a six-county area.
Horror movie buffs are familiar with Morristown as the filming site for The Evil Dead, the 1981 cult classic directed by a young Sam Raimi, who would go on to later renown as director of the blockbuster Spiderman films. Raimi used a cabin and wooded area located just off of Kidwell's Ridge Road as his main location site during his many months of sporadic filming. The cabin has since burned down, but the remains of its chimney still stand, and horror fans have been known to make pilgrimages to the site. |
