Knoxville, TN, near Honda Morristown in Morristown, TN

Honda Morristown in Morristown, TN, attracts customers from a number of surrounding cities and communities, but there is none larger than nearby Knoxville, Tennessee's third-largest city.

Founded in 1786, Knoxville is home to more than 170,000 residents, with a metro population of more than 650,000. Knoxville is the largest city in eastern Tennessee, and ranks behind only Memphis and Nashville in population within the state. Knoxville was the first capital of Tennessee when it entered the Union in 1796, and served in that capacity until 1819, when the capital was relocated to Murfreesboro – Nashville did not become the state capital until 1826. The city was named in honor of Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War.

Knoxville is sometimes known as "The Marble City," as it once provided much of the country with Tennessee pink marble from its numerous active quarries. Knoxville also was once known as the "Underwear Capital of the World," as no fewer than 20 mills operated in the city back in the 1930s, when the industry was the city's largest employer. But the city's textile and manufacturing industries began to dwindle in the 1950s and 1960s, prompting city officials to initiate several projects to boost revenue downtown. The 1982 World's Fair, which saw more than 20 countries participate and more than 11 million attendees, was just one result of these initiatives, and the success of the event has led to the continued redevelopment of the downtown area.

And Knoxville is, of course, home to the main campus of the University of Tennessee, founded in 1794 as Blount College and now one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. The popularity of the Volunteers is such that the area code of Knox County and eight other surrounding counties is 865 (VOL), and you would be hard pressed to drive so much as a city block without encountering some instance of the college's traditional orange and white adorning a home, building or vehicle.
